As many of you know Joel and Lori Basa’s youngest dog, Shine, is currently fighting very hard to heal from severe pneumonia. The Basa’s are doing everything they can to support their girl and get her through this. On Friday Aug 15th I saw Shine at my vet clinic for lethargy and not eating well. She was febrile and her X-rays showed pneumonia, her bloodwork was worring so we hospitalized her at Orchard Park Veterinary hospital for 24 hour care, where she currently remains. A few days of supportive care and antibiotics were expected for her to recover. However, Her disease process did not follow the book. Many tests, treatments and diagnostics have been preformed to get too the root of this. She continued to decline despite doing everything possible for her and became oxygen dependent the middle of last week. No clear answers yet, but Miss perfect Shine has been nothing but a trooper through everything. She has shown us that she is a fighter and she wants to get home! At this point she has stabilized but she still needs 24 hour care in an oxygen chamber while her lungs heal. Of course staying in the oxygen chamber is very costly and the bill is climbing. We all know the Basas, they are a pillar of our dog and agility community. They have never hesitated to help a student in need. They will keep fighting as long as Shine keeps fighting. If we can all pitch in to help I am sure it will take some of the stress out of this terrible situation. The longer she can stay in oxygen while she heals the better. Keep fighting Shine and we will fight with you!
